Photosynthesis Chp11 Flashcards
What is the balanced equation for photosynthesis
6CO2 + 6H2O + light = C6H12O6 + 6O2
What is photosynthesis
the process by which green plants produce glucose and oxygen from carbon dioxide and water
Source of light for photosynthesis
the sun
Source of carbon dioxide for photosynthesis
enters leaves from atmosphere or produced in respiration
Source of water for photosynthesis
absorbed by roots in the soil
What are the 2 phases of photosynthesis
light stage and dark stage
Where does the events of the light stage occur
chloroplast
What are the stages of the light stage
light is absorbed, light energy is transferred to electrons, pathway one and two
What happens in pathway 1
light is absorbed in the chloroplast, this charges a low energy electron, this electron goes through electron acceptors and makes ATP, electron goes back to chloroplast
What happens in pathway 2
H2O is broken down and the 2 electrons go to the chloroplast and get energy, these electrons pass through electron acceptors and make ATP, then the electrons combine with NAD+ and H+ to make NADH
What is photoliysis
the splitting of water by light
is pathway 1 and 2 cyclic or non-cyclic
Pathway 1 is cyclic, pathway 2 is non-cyclic
End products of the light stage
ATP, NADPH, oxygen
What happens in the dark stage
the chloroplast uses carbon dioxide and energy from ATP and H+ and e- from NADPH to make glucose
