Peripheral neve lesion Flashcards
1
Q
types of peripheral nerve damage:
Name 3:
A
- Neuropraxia = segmental demyelination, no axonal discontinuity; can recover; eg. Saturday night palsy
- Axonotmesis = axon discontinued but intact sheath; complete motor loss with or w/o sensory involvement
- Neurotmesis = loss of continuity of entire nerve trunk; complete motor and sensation loss
2
Q
Peripheral nerve Lesion cause:
A
- lack of axonal continuity–> atrophy
- negative symptoms: sensory loss, ↓tone, ↓reflex, muscle fasciculation, muscle atrophy
- positive symptoms (from excessive firing):
twitching, cramps, tingling
- eg. Trigeminal neuralgia, carpal tunnel syndrome, Guillain-Barre, Diabetic neuropathy, Alcoholic neuropathy
3
Q
Peripheral nerve lesion
=
sensory and motor (LMN)
Symptoms are:
A
Loss of sensation,
decrease reflex and muscle tone,
muscle fasciculation-> muscle atrophy
