Peripheral neve lesion Flashcards

1
Q

types of peripheral nerve damage:

Name 3:

A
  • Neuropraxia = segmental demyelination, no axonal discontinuity; can recover; eg. Saturday night palsy
  • Axonotmesis = axon discontinued but intact sheath; complete motor loss with or w/o sensory involvement
  • Neurotmesis = loss of continuity of entire nerve trunk; complete motor and sensation loss

Q

Peripheral nerve Lesion cause:

A
  • lack of axonal continuity–> atrophy
  • negative symptoms: sensory loss, ↓tone, ↓reflex, muscle fasciculation, muscle atrophy
  • positive symptoms (from excessive firing):

twitching, cramps, tingling
- eg. Trigeminal neuralgia, carpal tunnel syndrome, Guillain-Barre, Diabetic neuropathy, Alcoholic neuropathy
