Hemorrhagic stroke Flashcards
- Haemorrhagic stroke*
- define:*
- intracerebral bleeding occurs when a weakened blood vessel ruptures often due to aneurysms and arteriovenous malfomations (AVM’s) rupture.
- Maybe secondary to ischemic stroke following reperfusion (increased vessel fragility)
Hemorrhagic Stroke
Othere causes:
HTN-hypertension, amyloid angiopathy,
medications (thrombolytics, tPA, anti-thrombotics, anticoagulants)
Note: (tPA) Tissue plasminogen activator is a protein involved in the breakdown of blood clots. It is a serine protease found on endothelial cells, the cells that line the blood vessels. As an enzyme, it catalyzes the conversion of plasminogen to plasmin, the major enzyme responsible for clot breakdown
Hemorrhagic Stroke
Treatment:
- supportive Tx – management of BP, ICP, other complications
- detect and treat the cause of bleeding – may require neurosurgical intervention
- Nimodipine – to prevent vasospasm
Nimodipine
Define:
calcium channel blocker used in preventing vasospasm secondary to subarachnoid hemorrhage (a form of cerebral hemorrhage).
It was originally developed for the treatment of high blood pressure
