Q

Early and late post-traumatic brain lesions

Early:

A
  • • Early*
  • occurs at the moment of injury, mechanically-induced - 2 mechanisms: contact, acceleration-deceleration

- eg. haematomas, haemorrhage, contusion, laceration, oedema

Q

Early and late post-traumatic brain lesions

Late:

A

Late

  • *-** a result of process initiated by the trauma
  • *-** ↑ICP –> ↓blood flow to brain –> cerebral hypoxia, ischaemia, oedema, hydrocephalus, herniation
  • *-** ↑release of neurotransmiters (glutamate and aspartate) –> excitotoxicity
  • *-** inflammatory response and free radical dammage

–> breakdown of BBB
