Early and Late post-traumatic brain lesions Flashcards
1
Q
Early and late post-traumatic brain lesions
Early:
A
- • Early*
- occurs at the moment of injury, mechanically-induced - 2 mechanisms: contact, acceleration-deceleration
- eg. haematomas, haemorrhage, contusion, laceration, oedema
2
Q
Early and late post-traumatic brain lesions
Late:
A
Late
- *-** a result of process initiated by the trauma
- *-** ↑ICP –> ↓blood flow to brain –> cerebral hypoxia, ischaemia, oedema, hydrocephalus, herniation
- *-** ↑release of neurotransmiters (glutamate and aspartate) –> excitotoxicity
- *-** inflammatory response and free radical dammage
–> breakdown of BBB

Q
Early and late post-traumatic brain lesions
Focal vs diffuse
A
Focal - (Epidural, Subdural, Subarachnoid, Intraventricular, and Intracelebral) hemorrhage, and Cerebral contusion or lacerateion,
Diffuse- Diffused axonal Injury
