Q

Communicating Hydrocephalus

A

any disruption of flow after the CSF exited the ventricular system (cistern pathway and subarachnoid)

or

decrease in the circulation form cistern to the venous system (superior longitudinal arachnoid granulation)

  • no obstruction of ventricular system
  • CSF overproduction – choroid plexus tumour (but rare!)
  • impaired CSF reabsorption – SAH, meningitis, ↑venous pressure

Q
  • Obstructive hydrocephalus –*
  • or*
  • (non-communicating)*
A

refers to any disease process that

restricts CSF flow within or from the ventricular system, most common located in cerebral aqueduct

  • obstruction within ventricular system (most commonly in cerebral aqueduct)
  • causes: Spina bifida, congenital toxoplasmosis, tumour, stroke, head trauma
