peds59 Flashcards
flaccidity or no movement
suggests spinal or brainstem injury
hypoventilation
suggests opiate or sedative overdsose
hyperventlation
suggests metabolic acidos, neurogenic pulm edema, or midbrain injury
cheyne-stokes breathing
alternating apneas and hyperapneas; suggests bilateral cortical injury
apneustic breathing
pausing at full inspiration; indicates pontine damage
ataxic or agonal breathing
irreg respirations with no particular patern; indicates medullary injury and impending brain death
unilateral dilated nonreactive pupil
suggests uncal herniation
bilateral dilated nonreactive pupils
suggests topical application of a dilating agent, a postictal state, or irrev brainstem injury
bilateral constricted reactive pupils
suggest opiate ingestion or pontine injury
oculocephalic maneuver (dolls eyes)
in an injured brainstem, moving the patient’s head will not cause the eyes to move
caloric irrigation
put cold water in ear; normal response is eye deviation to the irrigated side;; abnormal response suggest pontine injury
