Paper 2 - Somatotypes And Energy Use Flashcards
What is a somatotype?
A method of classifying body types.
What are the somatotypes?
Ectomorph
Mesomorph
Endomorph
What are ectomorphs?
They’re characterised by being tall and thin, with narrow shoulders and narrow hips.
They succeed in endurance events like marathon running.
What are mesomorphs?
Characterised by a muscular appearance, wide shoulders and narrow hips.
They are suited to strength, agility and speed sports such as swimming.
What are endomorphs?
They’re characterised by a pear-shaped body and a tendency towards fatness. They have wide hips and narrow shoulders.
They are good in sports such as rugby.
What is calorie?
A unit of measurement for heat or energy production in the body, normally expressed as Kcal.
How do you maintain a healthy weight?
The amount of energy taken into the body must be matched but he amount of energy expended.
What are the factors affecting calories required?
Age
Height
Gender
Energy expenditure
What is meant by age?
Younger people, under the age of 25, need more calories than older people.
This is because, as you age, your body replaces muscle with fat, and fat burns fewer calories than muscle.
What is meant by height?
You need to consume more calories each day the taller you are.
This is because taller people have larger skeletons.
What is meant by gender?
Men tend to require more calories than women because:
Men tend to have larger skeletons.
Men tend to have greater muscle mass.
What is meant by energy expenditure?
The more exercise you do, the more energy you need, therefore the more calories you need to consume.
