Paper 2 - Arousal And Aggression Flashcards
What is arousal?
A physical and mental state of alertness/readiness, varying from deep sleep to intense excitement or alertness.
What is the inverted U theory?
It states that optimal performance occurs when a performer reaches an optimal level of arousal.
You are more likely to perform at your best when you are in the best possible physical and mental state.
What is the link between gross movement skills and arousal?
Generally require higher levels of arousal.
The mind and body need to be very alert to ensure that the strength, endurance and speed required to perform gross skills is available.
What is the link between fine movement skills and arousal?
Generally require lower levels of arousal.
The mind and body need to be calm to ensure that the coordination and concentration required to perform the small, precise movements are present.
What are the stress management techniques used to manage arousal?
Deep breathing
Mental rehearsal, visualisation and imagery
Positive self talk
What is deep breathing and what does it help do?
Taking slow deep breaths whilst relaxed.
This can help calm breathing and return it to its regular rhythm.
Slower, deeper breathing increases the supply of oxygen to the brain, helping to limit arousal caused by anxiety and stress.
What is mental rehearsal, visualisation and imagery and what does it help do?
Cognitive relaxation techniques involving control of mental thoughts and imagining positive outcomes.
They help the performer become relaxed and focused.
What is positive self talk and what does it help do?
A cognitive relaxation technique involving developing positive thoughts about your performance.
It involves reframing your thoughts, turning each negative thought into a far more positive thought.
It helps to reduce arousal caused by anxiety and stress.
What is aggression?
Often defined as a deliberate intent to harm or injure another person, nut in sport it can be more controlled.
It can be physical or mental.
What are the two types of aggression?
Direct
Indirect
What is direct aggression?
Is aimed at other players or participants and involves physical contact.
As long as the directly aggressive act - a punch in boxing - is within the rules of the game them it can be used to improve performance and to be successful.
What is indirect aggression?
Doesn’t involve physical contact with players or participants.
Its taken out on an object in order to gain advantage.
It includes hitting a tennis ball hard to win a point.
