Paper 1 - Types Of Levers Flashcards
What are the types of levers?
First class
Second class
Third class
What is the load arm?
The distance from the load to the fulcrum
What is the effort arm?
The distance from the effort to the fulcrum.
What is the mechanical advantage?
Measures the efficiency of a lever.
What’s the equation for the mechanical advantage?
Effort arm/ load arm
What is a lever?
A rigid bar that turns about an axis to create movement.
They all contain a fulcrum, load and effort.
What is a fulcrum?
The fixed point at which a lever turns or is supported (axis).
What is the load?
The weight (resistance) that the lever must move.
What is the effort?
The force required to move the load (force).
What is the mechanical advantage in a first class lever?
High if the fulcrum is closer to the load.
Low if the fulcrum is closer to the effort.
What is the mechanical advantage in a second class lever?
Always have a high advantage.
What is the mechanical advantage in a third class lever?
Always have a low advantage.
