Paper 1 - Aerobic And Anaerobic Exericse Flashcards

1
Q

What is aerobic exercise?

A

It takes place in the presence of oxygen.

When over a long period of time, not too fast and is steady, the heart can supply all the oxygen needed to the working muscles.

Q

What is anaerobic exercise?

A

Take place in the absence of enough oxygen.

When over a short duration, at high intensity the heart and lungs cant supply enough blood, therefore oxygen to the working muscles.

Q

What is EPOC?

A

Excess Post-exercise Oxygen Consumption.

The amount of oxygen needed to recover after exercise. Its characterised by an increased breathing rate and deeper breathing after exercise.

Q

Why should you cool down?

A

Rather than just stop you should gradually end the session, by doing some light exercises and gentle stretching.
This helps your body get back to normal.

Reduces the risk of injury and DOMs.

Q

What is meant by manipulation of diet?

A

Drinking water to rehydrate is essential to hep your bod recover and replace fluid. Factors such as temperature, humidity, and altitude affect how much you need.

For power athletes consuming protein after training is important as it has the nutrients to heal the tears and build muscle.

Q

What do ice baths and massages do?

A

They help to prevent DOMs immediately after exercise.

Massages increase blood flow to the sore area, speeding up the healing process and reducing pain.

Ice baths help flush lactic acid form the working muscles. The cold causes the blood vessels to constrict, forcing lactic acid out. When you get out your blood vessels dilate and bring oxygenated blood in.
