What is a skill?
A learned action or behaviour, with the intention of bringing about pre-determined results, with maximal certainty and minimum outlay of time and energy.
What is an ability?
An inherited, stable trait that determines an individual potential to learn or acquire a skill.
What is a trait?
Distinguishing qualities or characteristics belonging to a person.
What is a basic skill?
A simple skill that does not require much concentration.
E.g - throwing and catching a ball
What is a complex skill?
A skill that requires a great deal of concentration and coordination to perform.
E.g - athletics field events - pole vault.
What is an open skill?
A skill that is affected by the environment, where the performer must react and adjust to a changing situation.
E.g - rugby players have to outwit their opponents.
What is a closed skill?
A skill that isn’t affected by the environment or performers within it. So the skill is performed the same way every time.
E.g - diving (inside)
What is a self paced skill?
A skill that is started when the performer decides to start it. The speed, rate or pace of the skill is controlled by the performer.
E.g - table tennis (serve)
What is a externally paced skill?
A skill that is started because of an external factor. The speed, rate or pace of the skill is controlled by external factors - opponent/ environment.
E.g - badminton (opponents serve)
What is a gross movement skill?
A skill that uses large muscle groups to perform big, strong, powerful movements.
E.g - phases of a triple jump.
What are fine movement skills?
A skill involving small, precise movements showing high levels of accuracy and coordination. It involves the use of a small group of muscles.
E.g - cricket bowler when using spin.
