What is a sedentary lifestyle?
A lifestyle with irregular or no physical activity.
What are the consequences of a sedentary lifestyle?
- Increased risk of developing poor sleeping patterns.
- Increased risk of lethargy (lack of energy and enthusiasm).
- Increased risk of hypertension (having high blood pressure in the arteries).
- Increased risk of developing poor self-esteem.
- Increased risk of heart disease.
- Increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
- Weight gain possibly leading to obesity.
What does obesity mean?
A term used to describe people with a high fat content, caused by an imbalance in the number of calories consumed and the amount of energy expended.
What’s the equation for measuring if someone is obese?
BMI = weight (Kg) / height^2 (M)
What components of fitness can obesity limit?

What are the risks if you have physical ill-health?
Increased risk of:
Cancer Heart attacks and disease Hyperextension Developing type 2 diabetes High cholesterol
What is cholesterol?
Its a substance found in the blood and the cells of the body.
Excess cholesterol can build up on the walls of the arteries and restrict blood flow.
What are the risks if you have mental ill-health?
Increased risk of depression.
Increased risk of loss of confidence, including self-confidence.
How does depression affect people?
In different ways.
It can include feelings of sadness and hopelessness, losing interest in the things you used to enjoy and feeling very tearful.
It can also include physical symptoms, such as feeling tired.
What are the risks if you have social ill-health?
An increased risk of being unable to socialise, which can lead to poor mental health.
An increased risk of being unable to leave home, either because you’re physically unable to or because you don’t feel confident enough to go out and socialise.
