What is health?
A state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.
What is fitness?
The ability to meet or cop with the demands of the environment.
What are the components of fitness?
Cardiovascular endurance Muscular strength Muscular endurance Flexibility Balance.
Body composition Speed Coordination Reaction time Agility Power
What is agility?
The ability to move and change direction quickly, at speed, while maintaining control.
Games - football, basketball, rugby
What is balance?
The ability to keep the body stable by maintaining the centre of the mass over the base of support. There are two types -
Static
Dynamic
What is a static balance?
It’s performed with little or no movement.
Handstand.
What is a dynamic balance?
Its performed when movement takes place during a balance.
Cartwheel.
What is cardiovascular endurance?
(Aerobic power). The ability of the heart and lungs to supply oxygen to the working muscles.
Long distance running
What is coordination?
The ability to use two or more different parts of the body together, smoothly and efficiently.
Tennis, golf
What is flexibility?
Refers to the range of movement possible at a joint.
Dance, gymnastics
What is muscular endurance?
The ability of a muscle or muscle group to undergo repeated contractions, avoiding fatigue.
Pommel horse.
What is power?
The product of strength and speed.
Its also referred to as explosive strength or anaerobic power.
Power = strength x speed

What is reaction time?
The time taken to start responding to a stimulus.
What is muscular strength?
The ability to overcome resistance. There are four types -
Maximal
Static
Explosive
Dynamic
What is maximal strength?
The greatest force that is possible in a single maximum muscle contraction.
