What are the reasons for fitness testing?
- Identifying strengths and/or weaknesses to inform training requirements.
- Establishing a starting level of fitness and monitoring improvement.
- Motivation - establishing a starting level of fitness enables you to set realistic goals.
- Providing variety - fitness test can help you put together a varied training programme.
What are the limitations of fitness testing?
- Tests are often not sport specific.
- They don’t replicate the movements used in most sports.
- Tests don’t replicate competitive conditions.
- Many don’t use direct measuring/sub-maximal testing and therefore are inaccurate.
- Some tests have questionable reliability - fatigue.
- Some tests need high levels of motivation.
