P2 PHARMACOLOGY Flashcards
if your Pts pain score is 1-4 out of 10 , your drug of choice is
non opioid analgesics : NSAIDs / acetaminophen
if your Pts pain score is 15-7 out of 10 , your drug of choice is
weak opioids : tramadol , codeine , hydrocodone
if your Pts pain score is 8-10 out of 10 , your drug of choice is
strong opioids : morphine , hydromorphone , methadone , oxycodone , fentanyl
max. dosage for acetaminophen per day
4 gm/day
max. dosage for acetaminophen is to avoid
acute liver failure
NSAIDs are contraindicated in
- peptic ulcer
- gastritis
- renal failure
- pregnancy
NSAIDs are avoided in 1st trimester because they can cause
Miscarriage
NSAIDs are avoided in 3rd trimester because they can cause
Premature closure of ductus arteriosus & prolonged gestation
NSAIDs are avoided around 20 wks or later because they can cause
oligohydroamnios
Contraindications of Pethidine
Pts with impaired renal function
History of seizures
you should offer all opioid Pts
- laxatives
- antiemetic
- antipruritics
Opioid antagonist of choice if RR < 10/min
Naloxone
MOA of hydroxyurea
HbF inducer
side effects of hydroxyurea
- nausea / vomiting
- neutropenia / thrombocytopenia
- leg ulcers / koilonychia
- oligospermia
the side effects thrombocytopenia & neutropenia are due to
hydroxyurea myelosuppressive effect
