SCC
- smoking
- excessive alcohol
- diet low in fresh fruit and veg
- FH

Pathology?
A
upper 2/3–> SCC
low 1/3–> adenocarcinoma
local effects:
- obstruction
- perforation
- ulceration

epidemiology?
A
- increasing incidence in western world
- M>F

symptoms?
A
- progressive dysphagia
- odynophagia
- wt loss

signs?
A
hoarse voice indicating possible invasion of recurrent laryngeal nerve

Ix?
A
- OGD w biopsy
- comprehensive metabolic profile
- CT chest/abdo to stage
- PET CT

Q
Mx?
A
depends on stage..
- endoscopic resection with or without ablation
- oesophagectomy –> would use stomach to replace oesophagus
- palliative treatment if metastatic / unfit (stenting / radio/chemo)

prognosis?
A
5 year survival in resectable disease + chemo = 45%
