peak incidence 10-20 y/o

symptoms?
A
- acute abdo pain
- starts central then settles in RIF
- anorexia, nausea and vomiting

signs?
A
- tenderness in mcburney’s point
- 1/3 way from ASIS to umbilicus
- guarding
- rovsing’s sign
- palpation of LIF causes pain in RIF

Ix?
A
Diagnosis mainly clinical based on signs + inflammatory markers but
- CT useful in confirming diagnosis
- USS useful in women to exclude gynae pathology

Mx?
A
surgical - appendicectomy

DDx?
A
- ovarian cysts (w torsion or rupture)
- ectopic pregnancy
- meckel’s diverticulitis
- mesenteric adenitis

Q
what is meckel’s diverticulitis?
A
- malformation of distal ileum
- this can also get infected and inflamed just like appendix
