epidemiology?
A
- occurs in 20% of population
- younger adults
- F>M

symptoms?
A
- abdo pain/discomfort
- relieved by opening bowels or
- associated w a change in bowel habit
+ 2 of:
- abnormal stool passage
- bloating
- PR mucus
- worse symptoms after eating

diagnosis?
A
exclude other pathology
- Normal FBC, ESR & CRP blood tests
- Faecal calprotectin negative
- Negative coeliac disease serology
- Cancer is not suspected or excluded if suspected

Q
Mx?
A
- loperamide for diarrhoea, linaclotide for constipation, buscopan for cramps
- tricyclic antidepressants
- SSRI
+ general healthy diet and exercise advice
