  • abdo pain/discomfort
    • relieved by opening bowels or
    • associated w a change in bowel habit

+ 2 of:

  • abnormal stool passage
  • bloating
  • PR mucus
  • worse symptoms after eating

diagnosis?

A

exclude other pathology

  • Normal FBC, ESR & CRP blood tests
  • Faecal calprotectin negative
  • Negative coeliac disease serology
  • Cancer is not suspected or excluded if suspected

Mx?

A
  1. loperamide for diarrhoea, linaclotide for constipation, buscopan for cramps
  2. tricyclic antidepressants
  3. SSRI

+ general healthy diet and exercise advice
