Musculoskeletal injuries Flashcards
Tendons
Connects muscle to bone
Ligaments
Connect bone to bone
Types of joint motion
(6)
1.Flexion
2.Extension
3.adduction
4.Abduction
5.Rotation
6.Circumduction
Paresthesia
TIngling or abnormal sensation
Indicates nerve injury
Anesthesia
Loss of feeling
indicates nerve injury
Paresis
Weakness
Can indicate nerve injury
Types of fractures
(7)
- Communited
- Impacted
- Greenstick
- Oblique
- Spiral
- Transverse
- Hairline
Strain
injury to muscle or muscle and tendon
Sprain
Injury to joint capsule with damage to connective tissue/ligaments
6 P’s of fracture assessment
1.Pain
2.Pallor
3.paralysis
4.Paresthesia
5.Pressure
6.Pulses
When not to use traction splint on thigh
(5)
- injury w/ in 1-2 in. of knee or ankle
- Injured knee
- Injured hip
- Injured pelvis
- Partial amputation or avulsion, distal limb marginally connected
Basic splinting steps
(4) very basic
Manually immobalize
Check CMS
Splint
Check CMS
Three types of forces tha cause bone and joint injury
- Direct force
- Indirect force
- Twisting force
Osteoporosis
Define
- Dgenerative bone disorder that dramatically weakens the bones and makes them susceptible to fracture
Do you palpate the pelvis if the pt complains of pelvic pain?
- No doing so can move unstable bones, creating a greater issue
when do you realign extremities
- only if distal circulation is impaired
- double check this with jason
Compartment syndrome
Define
Injury occurs, swelling and bleeding happens between the tissues. If the pressure in the space around the capillaries exceeds the pressure needed to perfuse the tissue the blood flow is cut off leading to cell hypoxia
Nontraumatic fracture
Define
Degenerative bone diseases cause fractures without significant force
