Diabetes Flashcards
Insulin
Action
- secreted when BGL ^
- ^ of glucose out of blood into cells
Glucagon
Action
- secreted when BGL too low
- converts glycogon to glucose
Normal BGL
70-120
Hypoglycemia
Under 70
Hyperglycemia
Over 200
Type One Diabetes
Define
IDDM
Insulin dependant
Type Two Diabetes
Define
NIDDM
Insulin resistant
DKA
Define
BGL ^ 350
* not enough insulin
* brain ^ in glucose
* body cells use fats for energy
* Results in dehydration
(Diabetic Ketoacidosis)
HHNS
Define
BGL ^ 700
* enough insulin to prevent fat as energy
* No ketones or Kussmall breathing
DKA
S/s (9)
- Polyuria,polyphagia,polydipsia
- malaise,weakness
- nausea/vomitting
- dramatic weight loss
- Tachycardia
- Kussmall Resperations
- BGL >350mg/dL
- Abdominal pain/ muscle cramping
- slow onset
Kussmaul Resperations
Rapid, deep, sweet smelling respirations
Define
HHNS
How does it differ from DKA
Hyperosmolar hyperglycemic nonketotic state
* Body can still produce and utilize enough insulin to prevent DKA but not hyperglycemia
* BGL > 700
Differs from DKA based on the presence of kussmaul respirations
Where is glucogon stored?
Liver
Fasting state
BGL
80-90 mg/dL
What is the primary sign of hypoglycemia?
AMS
