- To provide a safe, sufficient, and timely supply
of blood and blood products - Ensure that the act of blood donation is safe
and causes no harm to the donor, medtech,
recipient, and other personnel involved
Primary Responsibility
donor is not allowed to donate blood
Deferral of donor
the length or duration of time before allowed to donate depends on the condition the donor has [as long as several years or as short as several hours]
Temporary deferral
Lower age limit:

WEIGHT
• At least 110 lbs (50 kg)
- Weight where you can extract 450mL of blood
safely
• Between 50 and 100 beats/minute with regular rhythm
PULSE RATE
Between 90 and 160 systolic and 60 and 100
diastolic (DH) or
- Systolic BP: ≤ 180 mm Hg
- Diastolic BP: ≤ 100 mm Hg
BLOOD PRESSURE
HEMOGLOBIN
• At least 12.5 g/dL
Temperature Determination for blood donation
- ≤37.5°C or ≤99.5°F

DEFERRED DONOR
• Diagnosed with AIDS
• Acquired Viral Hepatitis after age of 11
• Taking tegison
• Diagnosed with Babesios and Chagas Disease
• MSM (Male having Sex with Male)
• Blood-associated diseases
PERMANENT
DEFERRED DONOR
• Diagnose and treated with Malaria
3 YEARS
• Close contact with a Hepatitis Infected Individual
• Received blood transfusion, or injections of blood,
or products, organ, or tissue transplant
• Tattoo, piercing, acupuncture
• Received HB Ig [booster shot for hepatitis B]
• Travel to an endemic place for malaria [Palawan
and Zamboanga]
• Received rabies vaccine
• Positive for syphilis
• Sexual contact with a person with high risk to HIV
infection
• Female with contact with bisexual male (1977)
• Treated with syphilis and gonorrhea
• Underwent major operation (includes dental
surgery: root canals, etc.)
• Incarceration in a jail (>72 hours)
1 YEAR (12 MONTHS)
• Pregnant women (after weaning)
3 MONTHS
• Previous blood donation
• Treatment for retinoid
2 MONTHS
• German measles vaccine (Rubella)
• Taking acutane (isotretinoin), proscar (finasteride)
1 MONTH
• Acute failure illness (2-3 weeks)
• Measles (rubeola), oral polio, mumps, and yellow fever vaccines, BCG, smallpox vaccination
2 WEEKS
• Antibiotic for infection, oral antifungal
5 DAYS
• Hemapheresis donation
48 HOURS
• Allergies like penicillin
1 DAY
• Recent alcohol intake
12 HOURS
• Skin lesions
• Anti-TB drugs
