Media representations of Ethnicity Flashcards
Key argument
Media representations of ethnic minority groups are problematic because they contribute to the reinforcement of negative racist stereotypes.
Reflecting Realities - A survey of Ethnic representation within UK Children’s Literature (2017)
9,115 children’s books published in 2017
1/4 of the books submitted only featured diversity in their background caste
only 4% feature BAME characters
Only 1% had BAME main character
not possible to say BAME has increased as it may not be the case for all ethnic and racial identities under the broad umbrella term
Akinti (2003) - Claims that news on the black communitiy is always ‘bad news’
Argues that the television coverage of ethinic minorities over focuses on crimes, AIDS in Africa and black childrens’s under-achievement in schools, whilst ignoring the culture interests of a huge black audience and their rich contribution to British society.

As the highest-grossing movie directed by a black filmmaker in North America, Black Panther’s success (and 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes) is indicative of a wider point about the appeal of afrofuturism, and the desire for these stories to be told more broadly.
