Scottish identity and the future of “Britishness”
- Cultural resistance
In 2014 the campaign for Scottish independence raised issues on national identity.
Most people wanted independence because of identity. Around 50% described their identity as “Scottish not British” or “more Scottish than British. While only around 30% said “equally Scottish and British”
Disappearance of Britishness?
- Cultural hybridity
According to the sociologist Halsey, Britain lost it’s distinctiveness it had when he was a child and that our lives are becoming Americanised to the point that we can no longer say what is uniquely British in Britain.
Darcus Howe - White tribe (2002)
Argues that as someone who grew up in the Caribbean as part of the British Empire, he sees himself as Black and British but with the growth of English nationalism which seems exclusively “white”, he questions whether he would fit into a new nationalistic England.
