Disability Flashcards
Stereotypes
a widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing.
Discrimination
The idea that the identity of people with disabilities is not shaped by physical or mental impairment but instead by society’s prejudices and discriminatory practices.
Master status
is the social position that is the primary identifying characteristic of an individual. The term master status is defined as “a status that has exceptional importance for social identity, often shaping a person’s entire life.” Master status can be ascribed or achieved.
Victim mentality
when a person sees themselves as the problem in society, rather than seeing a society as not meeting their needs.
Learned-helplessnessar
a concept that originates in psychology, describing the way that some disabled people may internalise the idea that they are incapable of changing a situation and thus fail to take action to help themselves.
Self-fulfilling prophecy
a process by which individuals are labelled in a manner predicting their future and behaviour and because they come to see themselves as they have been labelled start to live up to that prediction.
Hidden disability
a disability experienced by someone that is not external or immediately visible.
Temporarily able-bodied
a term coined by disability activists to remind able-bodied people that their status is temporary and dependent on continued good health. It is a controversial term within disability activist communities.
