Media (Neo-Marxism) Flashcards
Hall (1981) - sterotypes of black people
Argued that the media operates with 3 overriding sterotypes the native, the clown, the entertainer and the slave;
Native - seen as offering nobility, dignity and savagery
Clown - seen as expressive, emotional and stupid
Slave - seen as devoted and childlike but also cunny and untrustworthy
Louis Althusser
Argues that the mass media are part of the ideological state apparatus. Along with education, family and religion, the media puts across an overwhelmingly pro-capitalist message that eventually comes to be seen as common sense.
Herbert Marcuse (Frankfurt school)
Argues that the masses are given false consciousness by the media.
Consumerism becomes the meaning of life. We are controlled by entertainment and consumerism – they keep people happy – act as an opiate (drug).
Soaps and comedies = escapism. Lifestyle programs = encourage consumerism. Quizzes = encourage greed.
Neo marxists - social groups who are seen as thereatning
Neo-marixsts argue that social groups who are seen as threatning to white middle-class nales are narginalised by being protrayed in negative, sterotyped ways and often subjected to ridicuke as a way of neutralising their ideas and removing any threat.
