Functionalism ethnic inequaties Flashcards
Functonalists argument towards
Point 1
Cultursl differences and low skills
woud argue that western society is meritocratic and based on value consensus. He argued that ethnic inequalties experienced by immigrants were due to cultural differences and low level of skills. As the children of early migrants assimilated to British culture they too would come to share British values
Functionalists would also argue that hosts are afraid of immigrant cultures
The host - Immigration model
Point 2
Patterson 2
Patersons suggested that there are three causes of ethnic inequalities:
Fear of cultural differences and the social change they might bring.
Resentment of having to compete with immigrants for scarce resources like jobs.
Failure of immigrants to assimilate
He argued that immigrants who continued to practise their own norms and values would experience hostility.
THE HOST – IMMIGRATION MODEL (PATTERSON 1965)
Patterson being optimistic about future of race relations in the UK
Ethnic minorties would eventually move towards assimilation
Argued that ethnic minorities would eventually move towards full cultural assimilation. This would involve:
- ACCOMMODATION – minimal adaptation and acceptance of mainstream culture.
- INTEGRATION – immigrants socialising with hosts outside of work.
- ASSIMILATION – full integration into society and acceptance of them by hosts.
The Host - immigration Model
Culture clash
Point 4
Patterson argued that Britain is stable, homogenous and orderly society with value consensus over values and norms
In the 1950s a wave of immigration disrupted this resulting in a culture clash whereby the host community (British people) became anxious and fearful of the ‘newcomers’.
Patterson suggested the culture clash was due to the fact that the immigrants subscribed to different cultural values
Eg. African-Caribbean immigrants were regarded as noisy and boisterous where as the English hosts valued privacy, quiet and keeping oneself to oneself.
