- Creating shared experiences for large numbers of people, e.g. use of TV nationwide can spread a message across the whole of society.
- The international nature of the modern mass media helps to bridge gaps between people regardless of physical distance – norms, values and behaviours can be disseminated globally
- Social media’s ability to create cultural trends e.g. Live streaming on platforms such as Instagram; Facebook.
Advertising – messages more likely to be received by many when repeated

In what ways might the mass media act as a barrier to achieving consensus?

- Some forms of media are only used by some age groups, and therefore media can segregate people by age
- Mass media can be used to create and maintain conflict based on inequalities (such as social class)
- Provides a platform for deviant behaviour (Deviancy Amplification)
- Social media platforms are ripe territory for conflict
- Echo chambers might be created, in particular in relation to news media
