The decline of male jobs in the manufacturing industry has resulted in a crisis of masculinity. Manual jobs have been replaced so men aren’t the breadwinners anymore.

Traditional masculine roles are under threat because of the Lad subculture. Laddish subculture is present in anti-school subculture where pupils reject the norms and values of school. This can be an explanation to why they are under achievers.

Suggested that boys relate to peers y doing while girls relate to peers by talking.
Sharpe
70% of working class teenage girls found their priorities were: love, marriage and children. She went back to the school in 1994 and found that the girls were more concerned with their careers.

5.2 million women were in poverty in the UK according to the latest data, compared with 4.7 million men
Children increasing the women’s risk of poverty
A quarter of women in poverty have children, compared to 17% who don’t have children. This gap has been narrowing over the last 20 years but looks like it has started to widen again so we need to take charge.
Single parents more likely to be in poverty

Women are much more likely to be in poverty if they are single parents than couple parents (46% compared to 22%).
Employment rate For women
The employment rate of lone parents in particular has risen sharply. Indeed, over the last 20 years the employment rate of lone parents has been constantly rising – 45% of lone parents working 20 years ago and 68% working in 2016.

The rate of poverty among ethnic minority women in the UK is much higher than among White women, Especially for Pakistanis and Bangladeshis.
