Marxism Ethnic inequalities Flashcards
Marxist point 1
as a way of what?
what do capitalists prefer
groups that help maintain
mmigration serves the needs of the capitalist class for labour, as it is used to divide workers so they are easier to control.
Capitalism prefers conflict between ethnic groups as it is beneficial to the ruling class.
Marxists argue that groups like the English Defence League and the media help to maintain conflict between ethnic groups.
Marxism
COX 1970
Point 2
means
Would argue that racism is socially contructed by those who control the means of production in order to justify the exploitation of less powerful groups.
Cox
Point 3
systematically exploit labour power
Cox argues that racism has its origins in the development of capitalism, with its need to systematically exploit labour power. (White people developed capitalism so therefore developed racism).
CASTLES AND KOSACK 1973)
Point 4
Most immigrants were concentrated in low skilled jobs
Castles and Kosack noted that most immigrants were concentrated in low-skilled manual jobs on low wages. Others were unemployed.
Marxists see racial conflict, discrimination and inequality as symptoms of some deeper, underlying class problem.
Would would critque Marxist view on ethnic inequalties?
Weber
Weber would criqtue and say that differences between the ruling class and the working class are significant, but so are the ethnic differences within these classes
Weber defines class in terms of:
Market situation: some workers have more sought after skills than others, which affects the level of their wages
Work situation: some workers have more authority than others, which affects their level of autonomy in jobs.
Brewer feminism
Argued black women face classim, racism and sexism and these inequalities intersect with each other. A poor black woman would be more disadvantaged in the workplace compared to a rich white man.
