Locomotion💘 Flashcards
What is locomotion
Making the body or preventing it from moving
Gait cycle
The period from heel strike of one limo until the next time the heel hits the ground
Divided into stance phase and swing phase
Heel strike
Lower forefoot to ground (ankle dorsiflexors)
Deceleration, hip extensors
Preserve longitudinal arch of (intrinsic muscles and long tendons of foot)
Loading response
Accept weight (knee extensors)
Decelerate mass ankle plantar flexors
Stabilise pelvis (hip abductors)
Preserve arch of foot
Mid stance
Stabilise knee knee extensors
Control Dorsiflexion
Stabilise pelvis
Preserve arch of foot
Terminal stance : heel off
Accelerate mass ankle plantarflexors
Preserve foot arch
Pre swing- decelerate thigh accelerate mass
Initial swing accelerate thigh lift foot
Terminal swing decelerate thigh and leg place foot
Antalgic gait
Reduced loading due to pain
Ataxic gait
Uncoordinated walk down on heel first then toes also do double tap
Eg multiple sclerosis and cerebellar diseases
Parkinson gait
Short accelerating steps often tip toe
Tredelenburg gait
Pelvis drops towards paralysed side when walking due to small gluteals
Ligament tear
Deceleration of rotational forces acting on weight bearing limb may tear anterior cruciate ligament
