Dna Rna Protein Synthesis Flashcards
What is a locus
Fixed points in chromosomes in which there is alleles coding for the same characteristic
What is the genetic code?
The sequence of codons in mRNA which code for a specific amino acid
The genetic code is
Degenerate-more than one codon can code for the same amino acid
Non overlapping-each codon is read in sequence, separate from the codon before
Universal-the genetic code is the same in all organisms
How is dna stored in eukaryotic cells(5)
DNA stored as chromosomes
It is linear
Its wound around proteins called histones
Mitochondria and chloroplasts in eukaryotes also contain dna
But their dna is short and circular
How non disjunction causes Down’s syndrome/ other named syndrome
Non disjunction means that the sex chromosomes fail to separate during meiosis
Results in one daughter cell having one more chromosome and other having one less
Gamete without X chromosome fertilized will result in turners syndrome
How does does crossing over occur
are pairs of chromosomes associate
Chaismata form
Sections of alleles get exchanged
New combination of alleles are produced
