B6 Flashcards
Sexual reproduction in animals
The joining of male and female gametes (spear and egg)
The offspring has a unique combination of DNA from both parents
Advantages of gm crops
Produces cures without animal cruelty Increase yield making more food People with lack of nutrients benefit e.g. Golden rice with vitamin a to prevent blindness Already going without problems More resistant to diseases
Disadvantages of gm crops
May affect number of wild flowers decreasing bio diversity
People think it’s not safe as it’s not fully understood
Transplanted genes may interbreed with other plants and produces weeds like superweeds as it’s not resistant to weed killers
Adult cell cloning
Take a body cell of the desired animal and remove the nucleus with an enzyme
We the remove an unfertilised egg cell from the animal that will carry the offspring and remove its nucleus
Place the body cell nucleus into the egg cell and place it back into the womb as an embryo has been formed
Sexual reproduction in plants
The joining of pollen and ovule cells in flowering plants
Why sexual reproduction produces variation in the offspring but asexual does not
In sexual reproduction there is a mixing of two genetic information one from the mother and one from the father
Asexual involves only one parent therefore there is no mixing of genetic information resulting in identical offspring (clones)
What is DNA
(Deoxyribonucleic acid)
It’s a polymer made up of two strands forming a double helix. It is found in chromosomes
