Lipid Lowering (General) Flashcards
1
Q
Lipids
A
AKA Triglycerides
Acts as energy storage
2
Q
Cholesterol
A
Synthesized by liver
- Excreted
- Remains unchanged in body
3
Q
Lipoproteins
A
Transports lipids in blood and extracellular fluid
4
Q
Apolipoproteins
A
Regulates lipoprotein metabolism
5
Q
Lipoprotein Lipase
A
LPL
- Hydrolyzes triglycerides in lipoproteins to form free fatty acids
6
Q
Lipid Abundance and Lipid Density
A
The higher the lipid abundance the lower the density
- HLD = Low lipid abundance
7
Q
Atherosclerosis
A
- LDL enters damaged endothelium
- Recruits macrophages
- LDL sticks to macrophages and forms foam cells
- Recruits SMC
- Calcification
- Cell apoptosis and cell death
- Forms thrombus, forms fibrous plaque, can rupture blood vessel
8
Q
Exogenous Transport Pathway
A
- Fats are taken from diet
- Take up Lipoproteins, Cholesterol
- Move through intestine
- Formation of Chylomicrons
- LPL cleave off TG
- Forms Chylomicron remnants
- Remnants taken up by liver
9
Q
Endogenous Transport Pathway
A
- Liver releases VLDL particles that circulate
2a. LPL cleave TG to provide energy for tissues
2b. When VLDL is cleaved they also release cholesterol (VLDL –> IDL –> LDL)
3a Through LDL Receptors tissues take up cholesterol from liver
3b. Through LDL Receptors liver can take back cholesterol
10
Q
Reverse Cholesterol Pathway
A
- HDL can take cholesterol from tissues
- HDL binds to LDL Receptor to reabsorb cholesterol back into liver
- Liver redistributes cholesterol
