Lecture 4 Flashcards
pH equation using [H+]
pH = -log [H+]
What is the normal range of [H+] in the body?
38nm - 42.7nm
How does a pH change of about 0.3 when pH is around 7 correspond to the change in [H+]?
It corresponds to about a 2-fold change in [H+]
What is the normal pH range for blood?
7.37 - 7.42
Equation for Ka
Ka = [H+][A-]/[HA]
Equation for pKa
pKa = -log Ka
Equation for pH using pKa
pH = pKa + log [A-]/[HA]
What is the normal pCO2 range?
35 - 45mmHg
What is the normal [HCO3] range?
22 - 26 mM
How are acidosis/alkalosis characterized?
When there is deviation beyond the normal ranges for pCO2 and [HCO3], which are 35 -45mmHg and 22 - 26mM respectively
Henderson equation
[H+] = 23.9 pCO2/[HCO3]
