define anatomy
the study of body structure and the relationships between structures of the body
investigates the structure and relationships of large body parts that are visible to the unaided eye
macroscopic anatomy
looks at the structure of tissues and their organization into organs

what is the anatomical position?
- standing upright, feet parallel
- head, eyes, and toes facing forward
- upper limbs by the sides of the body
- palms facing forward, thumbs directed outward
plane that separates the left and right
median plane
vertical cut which doesn’t have to be in the middle
sagittal/parasagittal plane
plane that separates front and back
frontal/coronal plane
plane that separates top and bottom
transverse/axial plane
refers to the front
anterior/ventral
refers to the back
posterior/dorsal
refers to the head

refers to the tail bone

close to the skin

on a horizontal line, refers to being towards the body

on a vertical line, refers to being far from the body

on a vertical line, refers to being close to the body

refers to the shoulder

refers to the forearm

refers to the hand

refers to the wrist

refers to the thigh

refers to the knee
