LEARNING + MEMORY Flashcards
what is learning
the acquisition of knowledge/skills through experience, study, or instruction
describe memory
the process allowing knowledge to be retained over time; storage + retrieval of information; learned behavior; must produce persistent functional changes representing experiences in the brain
what are the two kinds of memory
short term + long term
what are the two kinds of long-term memory
declarative (facts + events) and procedural (skills + tasks)
describe short term memory/working memory
preliminary step to remember or potentially store in LTM; 7-8 chunks of info; only 5% of info remains in STM
describe long-term memory
limitless capacity for info; can store/retrieve info; decreases with age; can be forgotten
describe fact/declarative memory
related to conscious throughout and the ability to manipulate symbols and language; usually filed in original context they were learned
describe skill/non-declarative memory
usually involves motor activities; experience + repetition; hard to unlearn; best to learn while doing
is it true that the pathway through which you solidify skills vs knowledge are different
yes
describe memory consolidation
group of processes that stabilize a memory trace after initial acquisition
what are some factors in transfer from STM -> LTM
emotional state, rehearsal, association, automatic memory
what helps with immediate LTM during emotional state
norepinephrine release
describe anterograde amnesia
cannot remember anything new, but can remember new skills; damage too hippocampus and temporal lobes
describe retrograde amnesia
cannot remember old memories
