Lab Ear (exam 4) Flashcards
What is the outer region of the ear called?
Pinna or auricle and auditory canal
What is the middle region of the ear?
Auditory Ossicles (3 bones)
What are the 3 auditory ossicles bones in order and there nicknames?
1) malleus- “hammer”- connected to ear drum
2) incus- “Anguil”- looks like a hammer
3) stapes- “stirrup”- connected to vestibule and part of inner ear
What is the cavity of the middle ear called?
Tympanic cavity
What is the tube that connects the middle ear to throat?
Auditory tube (Eustachian tube)
What does the inner ear do and what does it have?
Defects sound, orientation and motion
Has hair cells
What is a vestibular duct (Scala vestibuli)?
Transmits vibrations from oral window
Part of cochlea
What is a tympanic duct (scala tympani)?
Brings vibrations to round window
Part of cochlea
What is the cochlear duct (scala media)?
Surrounds organ of Corti
Part of cochlear
What is the oval window?
Fenestea avalis
Goes with vestibular duct
Part of cochlea
What is the round window?
Fenestra rotundrum
Goes with tympanic duct
Part of cochlea
What is endolymph?
Liquid found in cochlear duct (scala media) and organ of corti
Found in cochlea
What is perilymph?
Liquid inside vestibular and tympanic duct
Found in cochlear
What is the organ or corti?
Detects sound
Where it crosses over depends on pitch
If crosses high near oval and round window there is a high pitch
The further away the lower the pitch
Part of cochlear
What detects sound?
Cochlea- long structure rolled up to fit in skull
What is the basilar membrane?
Holds the hair cells
What is the tectorial membrane?
Overhanging shelf (above hairs)
Touched by hairs
What are hair cells?
Cells with little hairs
What is the auditory nerve and vestibulocochlear nerve?
Detects sound, orientation and motion
Yellow nerve in cochlear (part you have to open in ear model)
Blue thing on big board (not the vessel looking things)
What is cochlear problem type of deafness?
Sensorineural
What is ossicle bone problem type of deafness?
Conduction
Can be fixed
What is the path of sound waves?
Vibration in atmosphere—-> vibration in tympanic membrane——> vibration in ossicle bones—-> oval window—-> perilymph of vestibular duct (scala vestibuli)—-> passes through cochlear duct (scala media) contains endolymph—-> stimulates organ of corti
END OF SOUND
vibration has to leave through tympanic duct (scala tympani) and discharge are round window
What does the vestibule detect?
Orientation
Linear acceleration- going faster and faster in a straight line
What is the main body of the inner ear?
Vestibule
What are the 3 parts of the vestibule and explain each
1) maculae- hair cells inside structures
2) cupula- over hair cells (gelatin material)
3) otoliths- little stones in cupulas gelatin material
What detects turning motion?
Semicircular canals
What is the thickened part of the semicircular canal called?
Ampulla
What is the pinna or auricle?
Ear you see
What is the auditory canal called?
External auditory canal
What produces ear wax?
Ceruminous glands
What is the ear drum called?
Tympanic membrane
