L5 - Hematopoiesis Flashcards

1
Q

primitive vs definitive hematopoiesis

A

Primitive hematopoiesis occurs in the yolk sac, and RBCs are nucleated and express embryonic globulin chains. Definitive hematopoiesis occurs in the liver and other lymphoid tissues, and RBCs are non-nucleated and express fetal or adult globulin chains.

Q

red vs yellow bone marrow

A
  • Active bone marrow is red due to preponderance of RBCs.
  • During aging, active bone marrow becomes yellow due to fat deposition. However, it retains the capacity to revert to red bone barrow if necessary.
  • Red bone marrow concentrates at the epiphyses (ends of long bones)
