L18- Blood Flashcards
Hematology
Study of blood
Hematopoiesis
Formation of blood cells ( formed elements)
Hemoglobin
Transports o2(co2 & buffer)
Hematocrit
% of blood volume that is RBC
Hemostasis
Blood clotting
Hemostat
Instrument used in operating room to stop blood flow
Blood is made up of what two things
Plasma & blood cells ( formed elements)
Erythrocytes
Red blood cells
- make up 44% of whole blood
Buffy coat includes
Platelets = thrombocytes
Leukocytes = white blood cells
What are the five types of leukocytes
Neutrophils, basophils, eosinophils, monocytes & lymphocytes
Plasma is made up of
Water
Proteins
& other solutes
- makes up 55% of blood
What is the normal hematocrit (% RBC) for men and women
Women = 36%- 46%
Men = 41%- 53%
Hematopoiesis
Formation of blood cells
Erythropoiesis
Formation of red blood cells ; kidney releases erythropoietin as blood o2 decreases
Leukopoiesis
Formation of white blood cells
Thrombopoiesis
Formation of platelets
How long is the life span of red blood cells.
120 days - 3 months
How long is the lifespan of megakarycocytes
5-9 days
Lifespan of B & T lymphocytes
100-300 days
What initiates hemostasis?
Vascular injury ➡️ collagen to be exposed ( where platelets come in contact)
What are the 3 phases of hemostasis?
- Vasoconstriction
- Platelet plug
- Coagulation: clot forms
Vasoconstriction
Muscles contract
Platelet plug
- exposes collagen activating platelets to
➡️ release factors
➡️ making them sticky ( causing them to stick together)
Forming a plug
Coagulation clot forms by
By thrombin Converting soluble fibrinogen into insoluble fibrin ➡️ bind to platelets ➡️ clot to form
