Joints- Shoulder Flashcards
Scapulothoracic joint- articulation and function
-Not a true anatomical joint but a physiological joint which gathers the sternoclavicular joint and acromioclavicular joint.
It is the junction between the anterior surface of the scapula and the thoracic cage
- Action: Elevation, depression, retraction and axial rotation
What type of joint is the Glenohumeral joint?
Synovial ball and socket joint- with a hyalin cartilage and synovial membrane
What is the articulation of the Glenohumeral joint?
From the glenoid to anatomical neck of humerus and around the head
Does the GH joint have a capsule?
Yes, it is like a look cylindrical sleeve which is stronger anteriorly but quite lax because it needs to provide for movement.
Which ligaments are associated with the GH joint?
Ligaments around the region: Coracohumeral, coracoacromial ligament
What is the blood supply for the GH joint?
branches of the axillary artery
Nerve supply for GH joint?
axillary and musculocutoneous nerves
What type of joint is the Sternoclavicular joint?
Saddle synovial joint
What is the articulation of the Sternoclavicular joint?
Medial end of clavicle articulates with the end of sternum called manubrium
Nerve supply for Sternoclavicular joint?
Medial supraclavicular nerve, nerve to subclavius
Ligaments associated with the Sternoclavicular joint
Anterior and posterior SC ligaments, interclavicular ligament (between clavicle) and costoclavicular ligament (rib region towards clavicle)
Does the SC joint contain a joint capsule?
Yes
What does the intra-articular fibrocartilage disc do in the SC joint?
Improves congruency
What type of joint is the Acromioclavicular joint?
Plane synovial joint
What is the articulation of the Acromioclavicular joint?
Lateral end of the clavical and the acromion
