Joints- Knee joint Flashcards
What three bones make up the knee joint?
Femur, Tibia and Patella
Type of joint
Modified hinge joint
What 3 joints is this single synovial cavity made up of
Laterally a tibiofemoral joint, Medially another tibiofemoral joint, An intermediate patellofemoral joint
Tibiofemoral joint- type of joint and its articulations
synovial hinge joint, articulation between the convex surfaces of the distal end of femur on the condyles and the concave surfaces of the proximal end of the tibia.
Patellafemoral joint- type of joint and its articulations
diarthrodial plane joint, articulation between the patells notch (distal aspect of femur) and posterior surface of patella
Movements of the knee joint
Flexion, Extension, Medial and Lateral rotation
Minisci- location, function, features
- Sits between the tibia and femur
- shock absorber and provides a cup for the femoral condyles to sit in so helps with stability
- C-shaped fibrocartilage pillows that are thicker on the outside.
Bursae
Are packets of synovial fluid which prevent friction.
Prepatellar- located between the apex of the patella and skin. in front of your kneecap
Infrapatellar- below the kneecap, under the large patella tendon
Suprapatellar- an extension of the synovial cavity of the knee, located between the quadriceps femoris tendon and the femur.
Vascular of the knee joint (5)
Femoral artery
Tibial artery
Popliteal artery
Innervation of the knee joint (3)
Femoral nerve (L2-4)
Sciatic (L4-S3)
Obturator nerves (L2-4)
Joint capsule
Fibrous layer, the outer layer encloses the lateral and posterior aspects of the knee joint
Synovial layer, innermost layer encloses the medial and anterior aspects of the knee joint
Does it contain a fat pad?
yes
What does ‘screw home’ knee mean
The knees have a screw home rotation that allows for full knee extension and flexion
