Intake: Energy Flashcards
What is basal energy expenditure (BEE)?
min. amount of energy expended
What is resting energy expenditure (REE)?
energy expended in the activities necessary to sustain normal body functions and homeostasis
What factors can affect resting energy expenditure?
-age (highest during rapid growth)
-body composition (fat free mass causes high resting rate, which is common in athletes)
-body size
-climate
-gender
-hormonal status
-temperature
-caffeine, nicotine, alcohol
What is thermic effect of food?
an increase in energy expenditure associated with consumption, digestion and absorption of food.
What is estimated energy requirement (EER)?
average dietary energy intake predicted to maintain energy balance in a healthy adult
What is total energy expenditure?
resting energy expenditure and thermal effect of activity
What is resting energy expenditure?
basal energy + thermal effect of food + energy requirements for growth
How much protein needed for adults?
0.8 g/kg
