Q

Why is it Important?

A

Underscoring the importance of India’s participation this year, Indian Ambassador to Indonesia Manoj Kumar Bharti said that PM Modi’s visit may be short but will be “very important”.

This is because PM Modi will be formally taking over India’s
G20chairmanship for 2023.

“PM Modi’s coming to G20 is important because India is about to take the G20 Presidency from Indonesia, as far as Indonesia’s Presidency is concerned, India has continuously provided help to Indonesia, and the Indonesian government recognizes India’s cooperation too,”

Q

G20 agenda

A

During the G20 summit this year, India will raise the issues of renewable energy and the digital revolution.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to put forward India’s perspective on addressing key global challenges in areas of health, post-pandemic economic recovery and energy and food security at the summit.

At a media briefing, foreign secretary Vinay Kwatra said PM Modi will have separate bilateral meetings with a number of leaders on the sidelines of the summit but did not give a direct reply to questions on whether there will be a meeting with Xi.

Kwatra said Modi will participate in three key sessions — food and energy security, digital transformation and health — at the G20 summit and that he and other leaders will deliberate extensively on key issues of contemporary relevance, including the state of the global economy, issues relating to energy, environment, agriculture, health and digital transformation.

Challenges ahead

A

“The G20 countries are facing several challenges, which include the continuing uncertainty and challenges relating to energy security, the whole rubric of environment and climate challenges, the challenges related to food security and the problem of global health security,” he said.

However, the foreign secretary said the challenges also present opportunities in the digital space and the delivery of governance using digital platforms, which is a ‘unique competence’ of the Indian economic ecosystem.
