immune response Flashcards
what type of white blood cells carry out the non specific immune response
phagocytes
what type of white blood cells carry out the specific immune response
lymphocytes
what are the 2 types of lymphocytes
t cells
b cells
where are lymphocytes produced
in the bone marrow
where do t - cells mature
in the thymus gland
what type of immune response are t cells involved in
cell mediated immunity
what type of cells do t- cells carry out cell mediated immunity on
body cells that have been infected by non self material
(e.g: viruses)
cells from individuals of other species
abnormal cells of our body
(e.g: cancer cells)
different antigens to normal
where do B- cells mature
in the bone marrow
what type of immune response are B cells involved in
humoural immunity
(involves antibodies that are released into the blood plasma)
define humoural immunity
involves antibodies that are released into the blood plasma
list 2 types of antigen presenting cell
phagocytes present antigens after phagocytosis
body cell infected by virus will display part of the virus on it’s surface (viral antigen)
what does Th cells receptors having to be complementary mean in terms of what they can bind to
Th cells with receptors that are complementary to a specific antigen
therefore the Th cell will only bind to an antigen presented on the cell surface membrane of an antigen presenting cell
what causes the activation of a Th cell
the binding of an antigen and receptor activates a Th cell
what 3 things can the activation of a Th cell cause
- a memory cell to be formed
- stimulates B cells to divide and produce antibodies
- stimulate phagocytes resulting in increased phagocytosis
what is the function of memory cells
circulate in the blood and tissue fluid to prevent
reinfection with the same pathogen
