What are the three components of a passage set?
Handles, striker plate and latch bolt
What is a dummy?
Stationary door handle, not part of a latch system.
What must you check when installijng hardware on a fire-rated door?
Fire-rating for the hardware.
Standard position of a passage or locket set is:
Midway between top and bottom for flush doors and centered on the cross rail for raised panel doors.
Deadbolts are installed how far off the floor on a door?
48”
Backset for most locksets is either:
2 inch 3/8 or 2 inch 3/4 but many latches come with an adjustable backset.
What kind of hole is needed to install a lockset?
1” diameter hole through edge of door and 2” diameter hole through face of door.
What kind of drill bit is used for installing door hardware, creating a hole?
Hole saw-kit
What is the order for installing a lockset?
1) The face of the door is drilled first
2) A smaller hole drilled into the edge
3) Two types of latch bolts - One is driven into the edge and fits into the 1”hole, the other has a rectangular faceplate and must be mortised into the edge of door.
Strikerplates are installed into the jamb how?
Mortised into the jamb. If Mortising is done at the job site, a hole will have to be drilled or routered to receive the latch bolt.
Once the strike plate is installed, how can you adjust the plate to tighten the closed position of the door?
The tang can be adjusted.
When installing a door closer, there must be:
Sufficient clearance on the hinge side of the door.
Closer must be securely attached to the top jamb.
If jamb is too narrow, a mounting plate may be required.
Passage sets are located about halfway the height of a
6’ 8” door, this allows most doors to be flipped upside down so they can be hung either as a right-hand or a left-hand door.
