C3 - Stationary Tools Flashcards
To prevent stock from pushing the blade off the wheels, a band saw has:
Blade supports above and below the table
What is the purpose of the tension control handle on a band saw?
Allows loosening or tightening of blade during installation and tracking installations
Why does a band saw table have a slot from its center to its edge?
Slot allows the blade to be removed & installed in a loop
The wheel tires should have a slight: ?
Crown
If a long cut must meet a short cut in the same piece of wood, which cut should be made first?
the short cut cut made first, easier to back out of the cut
For re-sawing operations, a pivot block is better than a long fence, why?
It allows you to track wood and keep the board parallel to and at a constant distance from the blade.
How would you adjust a saw to perform a bevel cut?
Tilt the table
How would you compensate for blade lead during a ripping operation?
Align the cut line with the path of the blade
Ripping long dowels on a band saw requires the use of a jig to prevent the cut from:
Spiralling or turning
Which saw blade has wider gaps between teeth?
The band saw blades with a smooth and wavy edge are used for:
Metals
What kinds of metals can you cut on a band saw, using a metal-cutting blade?
Non-ferrous (non ferrous doesn’t spark !)
The upper guide assembly is adjusted to clear the work by:
6 MM
Before starting the band saw, check the table to make sure it’s
Clean & clear of debris
Before attempting to cut a sharp curve:
Make some relief cuts
In which direction must the teeth point as the blade passes through the table?
Teeth point down
/—-
/—-
/—-
The trunnion assembly, which allows the tabletop to be tilted should be:
Cleaned periodically and lubricated with dry lubricants.
What does it mean if a band saw vibrates when running at full speed?
1) Debris on the table
2) Wheel may be cracked
How much clearance is needed between the band saw & the blade guides?
16/1000 (thickness of 4 sheets of paper)
The blade guides should be set forward until they reach the ______? of the saw blade
Gullets
Describe the procedure for checking the blades tracking?
1) Adjust tracking control (behind the upper wheel)
2) While wheel turning, adjust control until the blades are at the centre of the tire, and stays there for 5 to 6 revolutions.
3) Once adjusted - tighten locking mechanism
Purpose of control switch?
Turn the power on and off
Purpose of the arm?
Supports all components above the tabletop
What is the source of power for the band saw?
Motor and drive belt
What does the drive wheel do?
Located at the bottom of band saw, gets power from the motor, and drive belt transfer that power to the saw blade.
What is the upper wheel’s functions?
Upper wheel can be raised or lowered to adjust the blade tension. Can also be tilted to adjust for blade tracking.
Tension control handle
Used to raise or lower the upper wheel when changing saw blades or applying tension to the blade.
Function of: Blade slot and insert
Used when you change saw blades
Function of: Tracking control handle & lock
Controls the tilt of the upper wheel, which adjusts the blade tracking on both the upper & lower wheels.
Three basic parts of the upper blade guide assembly:
1) blade guide at each side of the blade
2) blade support at the back of the blade
The function of a blade guide:
Prevent the blade from moving sideways or twisting when cutting a curve.
The lower blade guide assembly has three basic parts:
Two side guides and one blade support.
The function of a blade guard:
Blade guard protects you from touching blade above the blade guides.
Table tilt:
allows you to tilt the table from 0 to 45 degrees
Purpose of a wheel guard:
Upper & Lower guards protect you from the wheels of the band saw.
Purpose of wheel tires:
Protect the teeth of the saw blade and provide traction between the drive wheel and the blade.
What is lead?
When the blade starts to wander off the line of desired cut direction.
Two reasons for Lead
1) Dull teeth - the blade will tend to cut toward sharp
2) Poor setup of the bandsaw - misalignment of the blade on the wheel
The blade should have the bottom of the gullet aligned to:
Centre of the crown of the wheel, not the middle of the blade.
How to secure dowel when cutting?
V block, with nail in centre to hold down the dowel. Nail will prevent dowel from turning as cut is made. or clamp a square block to each side of the dowel.
Cross-cutting on a band saw?
free hand or mitre gauge
How to start circle cuts on a bandsaw?
Start across the grain rather than along the length, grain will push blade out of the line of cut
1) Cut line is approx 6 mm from edge of stock
Cutting the curve requires what?
A blade with adequate set to it’s teeth
The more set, the smaller the radius that it can cut.
3 types of blades used with a band saw:
1) Fabric cutting blades
2) Metal cutting blades
3) Wood cutting blades
Qualities of a metal-cutting blade:
1) 14 to 24 teeth per 25mm
Skip tooth blade has how many teeth per inch?
1 to 6 per inch
Regular tooth blade has how many teeth per inch?
4 to 10 teeth per inch
Regular teeth have two kinds of tooth blades, name those two types
Raker set (coarse) and wavy set (finer)
