B2 - LT#1 - Building Codes and Bylaws Flashcards
What is the path of safe exit called?
Means of Egress
How does a ramp allow for safe wheelchair use?
Limiting slope, allowing for turning and providing guards and/or curbs
What are the means of egress based on?
Occupancy type and occupancy load
Where would you find means of egress requirements for large buildings, public use or high hazard buildings?
Part 3
Protected path of travel that takes a person to outside the building
Means of Egress
True or false, the portion of building on one side of a firewall is considered a separate building?
As long as there is safe access to outside from this separate building, a door through the firewall from the burning building provides egress.
What is travel distance based on?
Distance is required to reach an exit based on building use, floor area, and occupant load.
How can you increase the travel distance by means of egress?
A sprinkler installation
EX. A classroom of 150 m2 allows for a means of egress doorway to an exit to be no more than 15 M but if the building is sprinkled, the distance may be increased up to 200 m
When an occupant load reaches 60 people, what kind of doors are required?
Doors must swing in the direction of travel when exiting.
Are exit widths based on occupant loads?
Exist widths for passageways, corridors, and ramps are normally 1,100 MM or 6.1 MM per occupant, whichever is higher.
What is an area of refuge?
Areas of refuge are safe, fire-protected areas connected to a means of egress. Fire separation protects them from the rest of the building.
BCBC requires what kind of room to be constructed as an area of refuge.
Operating, recovery, delivery, and intensive care rooms.
Which part of the BC building Code Book covers the requirements for hoarding?
Part 8
When is an engineer-stamped drawing required for hoarding?
If hoarding is structural, supports storage, offices, or lunch buildings over a side walk, the building authority requires engineer-stamped drawings.
