In mass concrete applications, how are panel aligning bolts used?
Line up panel forms at lower end of the frame.
What is a concern when designing the concrete for a gravity dam?
Heal of hydration and cost
Why is the concrete a different strength at the exposed faces of a gravity dam?
Durability.
What is used to help cool a gravity dam?
Cooling pipes/lines
Why is the concrete placed in blocks in a gravity dam?
Minimize shrinkage cracks.
What does a massive footing have in common with a gravity dam?
Large size, similar formwork set ups.
What is done to reduce the cost of a concrete mixture?
Less cement per m3, large well graded aggregate & fly ash.
Main concern when dealing with mass structures:
Heat of hydration
How do you lower the heat of hydration?
Lower cement content, well-graded aggregate, is used with large aggregate, which can be managed by mixing and placing equipment. Larger aggregate means less cement and less heat of hydration.
In footing construction, is the heat of hydration a concern or not?
Not as much of a concern.
