Q

Pile foundations are used when?

A

When bearing capacity is insufficient to carry the required loads. “Deep foundation or caissons” down to bedrock are used.

13
Q

What is a bearing pile?

A

Made of wood, steel or concrete.

Extends down to bedrock or solid soil, increasing ability to stabilize and support a structure. Transferring vertical load to solid ground below, they bear directly.

14
Q

Why is a grade beam used?

A

Often below finish grade, allows larger spacing of pile groups. Massive concrete beam poured on the pile caps or directly on the piles on which the building is erected.

16
Q

What is pile sweep?

A

A measurement of straightness determines curvature of the pile from head to foot as deviation from a straight line.

17
Q

What is pile swell?

A

When the pile is driven, soil around them tend to heave up. Displacing the soil.

18
Q

How are piles placed in sandy conditions?

A

Piles may be jetted into position with the use of water, where precast piles have a hole in the center where water is forced under high pressure and is forced back up, taking the sand with it, through the slots around the perimeter. Cavity created allows the pile to be lowered by gravity.

19
Q

An alternate method to placing pile in the sand:

A

High frequency vibration.
