G3 - Describe Pile Foundations Flashcards
When is the driving of bearing piles stopped? What identifies the stopping point by name?
Point of Refusal
What is a large caisson?
Large Pile
Describe the difference between a sheet pile and a bearing pile.
Sheet - Lateral Load
Bearing pile - Vertical Load
Why are friction piles driven in groups?
Share the load
Cased pedestaled concrete

Cased Pile with compressor base
What type of pile depends on the resistance developed between the soil and the surface area of the pile?
Friction pile
When are bearing and friction piles called for?
When the surface soil cannot support the load on convention spread footings.
Pile foundations are used when?
When bearing capacity is insufficient to carry the required loads. “Deep foundation or caissons” down to bedrock are used.
What is a bearing pile?
Made of wood, steel or concrete.
Extends down to bedrock or solid soil, increasing ability to stabilize and support a structure. Transferring vertical load to solid ground below, they bear directly.
Why is a grade beam used?
Often below finish grade, allows larger spacing of pile groups. Massive concrete beam poured on the pile caps or directly on the piles on which the building is erected.
What is the point of refusal?
Bedrock or soil that can withstand the loads placed on it by the structure.
