C1 - LT#2 - Use Finishing Tools Flashcards
What angle is a chisel blade sharpened to?
25 degrees to 30 degrees
What is the fastest speed a grinding wheel should turn for sharpening a chisel?
1750 RPM
List the steps to sharpen a scraper
1) File away old edge and any wire edges with whetstone
2) Hardened smooth steel rod is used called banishing tool used on the prepared edge to roll a small curled piece of steel to form a very sharp new hook.
What is burnishing?
To smoothen the scraper’s edge.
What does a sharp scraper produce when being used?
A very smooth surface requiring very little sanding
How many minutes of use will a scraper normally stay sharp for?
10 minutes.
List 5 maintenance procedures with clamps?
1) Do not allow clamps to become rusty
2) Remove any lumps of glue that may have gathered
3) Store clamps in a clean, dry place
4) Straighten pipe of pipe clamp carefully
5) Clean notches of a quick acting clamp
What is the procedure when using six clamps to glue three boards together?
1) Install 3 clamps, tighten gently
2) Install remaining 3 clamps
3) Position clamps in alternating directions
4) Increase pressure gradually and evenly for all six clamps
What are the first three steps when whetting a chisel blade?
1) Work back edge
2) Turn over and hone bevel edge
3) Whet back edge again to remove wire edge
What should you apply to chisels to protect them in storage?
Corrosion inhibiter
Three ways to make better cuts with a chisel:
1) Make cuts with the grain of the wood, rather than against the grain
2) Angle the blade across the board
3) Use the bevel side to control the depth of cut
List two-step operation for sharpening a chisel:
Grinding and then whetting
The cutting edge of a chisel blade is ground at what degrees?
25 to 30 degrees, grinding should be done at 90 degrees to the side of the blade.
What are the grinding dimensions for grinding wheel when working with a chisel?
Wheel should be at least 150 mm, no less than 25 mm wide. Grit should be #80 aluminum oxide. Max RPM 1750.
What risks are there when grinding a chisel blade?
Overheating and removing the temper from the steel. If the temper is removed, the blade will not hold a fine edge and need to be sharpened more often.
