Q

List the steps to sharpen a scraper

A

1) File away old edge and any wire edges with whetstone
2) Hardened smooth steel rod is used called banishing tool used on the prepared edge to roll a small curled piece of steel to form a very sharp new hook.

Q

Three ways to make better cuts with a chisel:

A

1) Make cuts with the grain of the wood, rather than against the grain
2) Angle the blade across the board
3) Use the bevel side to control the depth of cut

15
Q

What risks are there when grinding a chisel blade?

A

Overheating and removing the temper from the steel. If the temper is removed, the blade will not hold a fine edge and need to be sharpened more often.

16
Q

What is the purpose of the whetting process?

A

Used to put a second micro bevel on the cutting edge of the chisel blade.

17
Q

How sharp is a whetstone?

A

Whetstone is much finer than the grinding stone and leaves the chisel blade much sharper than the raw ground edge.

18
Q

What grit stone should you start whetting with?

A

Whetting should start with a medium stone (800-1200 grit) and finish with a fine stone (4000-8000 grit).

19
Q

What is the procedure for whetting?

A

1) The stone’s surface must be kept well-lubricated with the proper liquids for each type of stone, water for a waterstone or diamond, and light oil for an oilstone.
2) Work the back of the chisel against the stone, keeping it flat.
3) Turn the chisel blade over and place it on the stone so that the bevel is in full contact with the stone. Raise the back of the chisel blade slightly, so that only the front edge is in contact.
4) Move the chisel blade back and forth on the stone, ensuring the edge is in contact with the stone. The wider blade is held diagonally.
5) Figure 8 or circle motions are acceptable but require practice.
6) Continue whetting until a wire or featheredge is formed on the backside of the chisel blade, after about 10 to 12 strokes.
7) Turn the chisel over and with the back of the chisel blade flat on the stone, draw the chisel blade backward to remove the wire edge.
8) If you have a fine stone, repeat the process on the fine surface of the stone.

20
Q

What is used to clean and remove clogged particles from the teeth of files?

A

A file card

21
Q

List practices for storing a file:

A

1)The file should be cleaned before storage to prevent rust and to maintain sharpness.
2) Files should not be in contact with each other or other tools when stored.
3) Keep oil, paint, and dirt away from the files as they will clog the teeth.
4) Keep the files dry to prevent rust.
5) Files cannot be sharpened so they should be discarded and replaced once worn.
